About This Spot

Stepping into Ichi Zen Pavilion KL is like finding a quiet corner of Japan amidst the lively buzz of Bukit Bintang. Nestled on the sixth floor of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, this restaurant invites you to slow down and savor moments that feel both familiar and distinctly intimate. The soft clatter of dishes, the gentle murmur of conversations, and the subtle aroma of grilled fish create a rhythm that encourages you to settle in and enjoy the ritual of dining as more than just a meal.

The space carries a welcoming warmth, neither overly polished nor too casual—striking a thoughtful balance that feels personal. It’s a place where you can quietly observe the delicate art behind every plate, yet feel at ease enough to share laughs across the table. The pace here isn’t hurried; instead, it invites you to engage with each dish thoughtfully, letting the flavors reveal themselves gradually.

Foods arrive with a sense of care that echoes the straightforward elegance of traditional Japanese fare. You might find the buttery texture of salmon belly sashimi melting on your tongue or the playful crispness of anago tempura offering a comforting contrast. The menu moves beyond mere sustenance, serving instead as a subtle conversation between fresh ingredients and skilled preparation, whether in a satisfying set dinner or a casual bowl of ramen.

There is a tangible consistency in the experience here, a quality that draws regulars back time after time—not for novelty, but for the reliable pleasure of honest Japanese cooking done well. The welcoming atmosphere gently folds around you, enhanced by attentive service that feels thoughtful rather than formal, creating space for connection at every table.

For those who appreciate the harmony of textures and flavors, Ichi Zen Pavilion offers moments worth lingering over—from the comforting warmth of tonkotsu broth to the refined simplicity of sushi made with fresh, delicate fish. It’s a quiet celebration of Japanese cuisine where the emphasis is on savoring the here and now, alongside those you’ve come to share the experience with.

We’ve been regular customers of Ichi Zen Japanese Restaurant for many years – it’s always been our go-to spot for Japanese food whenever we visit Pavilion. The taste remains consistent and enjoyable, which is why we keep coming back. However, during our most recent visit, we noticed a slight change – the portion sizes have noticeably decreased. Here’s what we ordered: 1⃣ Ebi Tempura (RM25) – Crispy and well-fried as always, but the number and size of prawns were fewer compared to before. 2⃣ Tonkatsu Set Lunch (RM23) – Delicious and satisfying, but the pork cutlet portion was smaller than usual. 3⃣ Salmon Toro Teriyaki (RM27) – Still one of our favourites, but the serving size was quite small this time. The service was still fast and friendly, and the food quality remains good. However, with a bill totaling RM90, the value felt slightly underwhelming this time. To the management: We genuinely love this place and hope it continues to do well. Perhaps consider refreshing the interior a little, as it’s starting to look a bit dated. Also, the menus could use a reprint – some of them have an odd smell and are worn out. We’ll continue supporting the restaurant, and look forward to improvements in the near future!

The ramen set is such great value for money - only RM29.90 and you get 1 ramen, 1 side dish (like sushi, tempura, etc), and even 1 ice-cream! Portions are generous, and everything is yummy

Ichi Zen Pavilion delivers an authentic Japanese dining experience with a warm, inviting atmosphere. The menu boasts an impressive range of dishes, from fresh sashimi and sushi to hearty ramen and flavorful teppanyaki. A highlight is their creamy mentaiko noodle, served with fresh cabbage, tender meat, and a perfectly cooked onsen egg. The rich, savory sauce is balanced by the light crunch of vegetables, making each bite satisfying. Portions are generous, and presentation is elegant. Service is attentive, adding to the overall pleasant experience. Whether for a casual lunch or a special dinner, Ichi Zen Pavilion is a must-visit for Japanese food lovers.

I’ve been to Ichi Zen a few times, but this visit was especially satisfying. The sashimi platter (Natsu) was beautifully sliced and fresh — especially loved the scallop and sweet shrimp. The unagi crispy roll was my personal favourite: crunchy on the outside, soft and flavourful inside. Their tonkotsu soup came as a surprise. It is comforting, rich but not greasy, and the pork slices were super tender. I also tried the truffle shirataki, which was light, springy, and had that earthy truffle note without being too strong. Another must-mention: the salmon mini pizza. It's basically crispy gyoza skin topped with a creamy salmon-avocado mix fun and addictive.

What do you do after a good breakfast at Genting? Of course you eat again :) I ordered truffle aburi tamago, hotate truffle aburi, shiro maguro, and hamachi. Also shared the kaki mentai yaki with my daughter. Verdict - if I wasn’t bursting at my seams I would have love to try more of the food here. Will be back again.

Located within Tokyo Street in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, this restaurant offers delicious Japanese bento sets. I tried the Sashimi to Salmon Shioyaki/Teriyaki Set, and the portion was generous. The sashimi was fresh, and the salmon was perfectly cooked — both options, Shioyaki and Teriyaki, are available for this set. Although the prices are slightly higher compared to some other Japanese restaurants, the overall dining experience was satisfying and worth it.

They have a large menu selection. Portions are on the smaller side but it’s enough food. Overall food was good and enjoyable. Truffle fried rice was very tasty.

I was here this evening for dinner. It was my first time here - I am currently visiting Kuala Lumpur from Johor Bahru. I was fortunate even to secure a booth seating for my dinner here. I ordered a Buta Kakuni Ramen that was very good and chock-full of proteins; a Chuka Wakame that was refreshingly good; an platter of Salmon Belly Sashimi that was only thick cut but in big slices also; and I also a glass of refreshing fresh Lemon Juice. Overall, I enjoyed my selections very very much. Service here was very good - very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this Japanese restaurant if you in need of some very good Japanese food.
